The Region: An Insider’s Tip!
The steep, green-striped hills with the wine terraces, cherry trees, chestnuts and the tall poplars reminds one of a little Tuscany or the little sister of southern Styria – only quieter, less discovered, and more original. Enjoy its welcoming feel and simplicity.
Meet friendly people, discover homemade delicacies and taste wines from passionate winemakers still operating as small family businesses with a love for experimentation (producing the likes of “Orange Wine.”)
Jeruzalem existed at the time of the Knights Templar. Whether some of them settled here on their way to the Holy Land or while retreating, remains an unsolved mystery.
Today, their traces can be followed on the many cycling and hiking routes, including the route of the of the Slovenian Way of St. James. Whether it’s an easy walk or a challenging mountain bike tour – anywhere you go you can take a break in a small wine tavern with terraces and beautiful views of the rolling hills, vineyards, and
church steeples in small hamlets. On the clearest of days, the view extends to Hungary, Croatia and up to the Koralpe in Austria.
On day bike trips you can explore the towns in the area – Varazdin, Ptuj, Bad Radkersburg and Ormoz – or ride along the Mura and Drava rivers.
Each small town has its own historic center, castle or fortress. During the Austrian monarchy this area – the “Lower Styria”; – was a well-fortified bulwark against Ottoman invaders.
For the rare rainy days, visits to thermal baths or a city and museum tour in Ptuj, Varazdin or Ormoz are good options.
